Glenelg’s Schaffer and Boonsboro’s Akers named BTC Co-Coaches of the Week
Gladiators halted Howard win streak; Boonsboro deliver 200th career win for their coach
For the first time, the BTC has named Co-Coaches of the Week, honoring Glenelg’s Butch Schaffer after his Gladiators stopped Howard’s 33-game winning streak against County opponents, and Boonsbor’s Clayton Akers, as his squad improved to 8-1 with a 71-42 rout of Winters Mill, giving the veteran coach is 200th career victory. Howard had not lost in Howard County in nearly three years, with a relentless running game that paved the way to a 25-20 victory. “I am very proud of our kids,” said Schaffer. “Howard is a tremendous football program. For our kids to stand toe-to-toe for four quarters took an outstanding effort. I think we are getting better each week. We must to continue to evolve as the year goes on to be success.” Schaffer pointed to his assistant coaches for their work with the Gladiators. “Coach Cullen does a great job with our defense each and every week. James Speake (OL/DL), Adrian Crow (OL/DL), Todd Kriner (Special Teams/QB/DB) and Doug Withrow (RB/LB) do a tremendous job preparing our kids each week.” Schaffer also commented on being recognized by the BTC. “It is a great honor to be selected by my colleagues for whom I have the utmost respect,” added Schaffer. “The BTC is one of the best organizations in the country, promoting high school football. They are at the forefront of helping our game move forward. Scott Ripley, Doug Duvall and company are the best.” In propelling their coach to his milestone victory, the Boonsboro offense had an big night, led by 212 yards rushing and five touchdowns from senior Jake Hardy. “It’s actually a relief because it was a little bit of a distraction,” said Anders of his 200th win. “I just kind of wanted to focus on the game. This was our first opportunity to get 200, and we got it.” After breaking through last fall with an undefeated regular season and an appearance in the 1A West Region Playoffs, the Warriors are looking to make a deeper run in the post-season this fall.
