Walkersville’s Polce named BTC Coach of the Week

Lions are off to a 6-0 start in 2016

The Walkersville football team has been on a roll over the last two seasons, following last year’s appearance in the 2A state championship game with a 6-0 start in 2016. The latest victory, a 48-6 rout of Catoctin, last Friday, on the Lions Homecoming has earned head coach Joe Polce honors as the Week 6 Baltimore Touchdown Club Coach of the Week. Walkersville’s Chad Gleason scored on a 50-yard TD run, on the first snap from scrimmage. Gleason would go on to touch the football just four times in the game, scoring touchdowns each time, three rushing and one receiving. Walkersville also received a rushing touchdown from Jacob Wetzel, a TD grab from Josh Polce and a punt return for a touchdown by Ty Littlejohn. Polce took over at Walkersville, his alma mater, after four seasons as the head coach at Urbana where he posted a 33-14 record and went to the state playoffs all four years. Now in his 7th season with the Lions, he is 49-25 with three 10 win seasons and only one losing one. Last December’s appearance in the 2A final was a first for the school. “Making it to the state title game has provided our team with a great deal of motivation,” said Polce. “Our players have been using the experience from last season to provide a spark since winter workouts started in January.” Winning at Walkersville takes on extra significance for Polce. “I take a great deal of pride in being the head football coach at my alma mater and in the community in which I live. It makes it extra special to be working with a group of young men that I have been coaching since they were 8 and 9 years old.” According to Polce, his staff is a major factor in the program’s growth. “At Walkersville we are blessed to have an outstanding coaching staff,” said Polce. “Erick Greene is the defensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Will Gant is the linebackers and running backs coach, Randy Steiner is the wide receiver coach and Rob Holste is the outside linebackers coach. We also have Lee Palmer, Greg Jackson, Chris Walters, Eric Elkins and Craig Hackett who do an excellent job with the JV team.” Being honored by the BTC is special to Polce. “The Baltimore Touchdown Club is an organization made up of outstanding football coaches. To receive an award from this group of men means a tremendous amount to our entire program. “The BTC does an excellent job promoting high school football around the state
