Edmondson’s Corey Johnson is the Week 9 BTC Coach of the Week

His Red Storm improved to 7-1 in a big win over previously unbeaten Mervo

The goal of every high school football team is to improve from one week to the next and that is what the Edmondson-Westside team has done throughout 2015. Last Friday, the Red Storm (7-1) won its seventh consecutive game, knocking off previously unbeaten and 12th-ranked Mervo, 18-15. The man leading Edmondson is third-year head coach Corey Johnson, who has been named the Baltimore Touchdown Club Coach of the Week for Week 9 of the 2015 football season. “We really felt well prepared; we had an excellent week of practice and we thought we matched up against them well,” said Johnson of his squad’s performance against Mervo. “The defensive efforts we received from Tyshaun Ravenell, Kamal Highsmith, James Williamson and Cameran Edwards were tremendous. Mervo was so strong up front, we knew we needed a solid passing attack to beat them and sophomore quarterback Teon Gardner and senior receiver Bilal Omar stepped up and made big plays.” With two regular season games remaining, Edmondson is now well positioned for the home stretch. The Red Storm still must face Carver Vo-Tech and rival Dunbar, before an expected appearance in the 1A state playoffs. According to Johnson, the Red Storm still has room to improve and revealed the keys to doing so. “Staying humble and focused. We have so much room for growth and it’s important that my staff continues to facilitate that growth.” Recognition as the BTC Coach of the Week is something Johnson cherishes for his program. “It really means a lot and for the players as well,” said Johnson. “It means that we have accomplished some goals that we set for ourselves at the onset of the season. We have a rich football tradition here at Edmondson and we are honored to receive this award.” Coach Johnson also had high praise for the Baltimore Touchdown Club. “The BTC along with Varsity Sports Network are the only vehicles that continue to promote and show the positive aspects of high school football in Baltimore. I am proud to be a member of the BTC,” said Johnson. “Through all of the efforts from folks like Mike Working, Doug Duvall, Scott Ripley, and others, the BTC has helped hundreds of kids realize their dream in playing college football, but more importantly receiving a college education. As a result of this, our organization has continued to grow, further impacting the lives of many more young men in the Baltimore Metro area.”
