Glenelg’s Schaffer is BTC Coach of the Week

Gladiators’ leader has his team 8-0

The Glenelg football program has had a lot of success since the 2006 arrival of head coach Butch Schaffer, but never before have the Gladiators been 8-0, as they are in 2018 after last Friday’s 12-0 win over Howard County rival River Hill. On the evening, the Gladiators’ sensational senior running back Wande Owens rushed for 280 yards to become Howard County’s all-time leading rusher with 5,095 career yards, and the Glenelg defense pitched its fourth shutout of the year. The result also brought recognition to Schaffer, who has been named this week’s Baltimore Touchdown Club Coach of the Week. “It is a great honor for our team,” said Davis of the award. “We knew we returned a very special group with great leadership. We have many kids who have played a lot of varsity football games. This group is extremely hardworking, dedicated, and committed. They are a very cohesive group on and off the field.” Schaffer, who is now 95-45 during his time with the Gladiators, has admired the work of Owens since his freshman year, and he is seeing his senior star complimented by an stingy defense, which has allowed just 59 points this fall (less than 7.4 points per game). “The key to our defensive is our defensive staff, led by Tim Cullen and assisted by Todd Kriner and Steve Tiffany,” said Schaffer. “They get our kids ready to play each week. “The entire defense has played well. Sam Alsheimer, Michael Doughty and Tyler Reiff make our calls and have been outstanding. We have an experienced secondary led by Eric Gruber and Wande Owens as well as an experienced defensive line with CJ Davidson, Otto Trawick, Jake Arnone, Griffin Doyle and Elijah Deese.” To be recognized by his peers in the BTC is special to Schaffer, but he considers an honor for his entire staff and all of the players. “The recognition is a tremendous honor for our team and all the hard work they have put into being successful.” stated Schaffer. “I am fortunate to work with such a great group of young student-athletes and coaching staff.” The complete Gladiator coaching staff, which Schaffer said are “instrumental in our success with the development of our players,” includes: Tim Cullen - Defensive Coordinator Todd Kriner –Varsity Assistant Steve Tiffany – Varsity Assistant Adrian Crow- Varsity Assistant Joe Derwent – JV Head Coach Ralph Hoyt- JV Assistant Tom Thrasher- JV Assistant Nick Hoyt - JV Assitant Finally, Schaffer praised the work of the Baltimore Touchdown Club. “The BTC does an outstanding job of promoting high school football in the state of Maryland. They work tirelessly in helping players around the state get the recognition they deserve. I am proud of being part of the organization.”
